Our Message to Venezuela

The dialogue process begins with a commitment to respecting popular sovereignty, human rights, and political rights for all.

Today, August 6, dialogue began between lawmakers from Venezuela’s 2015 National Assembly and representatives of the interim government. During the first meeting, the parties began implementing the agenda previously agreed upon for this process, which seeks to achieve stabilization, economic recovery, political reconciliation, and a peaceful transition.

Following the formal launch of the process, the parties discussed various agenda items, paying particular attention to those related to the re-institutionalization of Venezuela.

We issued a joint statement reaffirming that this process seeks to secure “benefits for Venezuela,” “respect for popular sovereignty,” “the protection of human rights,” and “the protection of the political rights of all political forces.”

The representatives of the interim government and the lawmakers of the 2015 National Assembly also committed to maintaining “equal treatment at the negotiating table” and guaranteeing the “verifiable fulfillment of the commitments” that are agreed upon.

This first work cycle will take place over five sessions: August 6, 7, 10, 11, and 12. At its conclusion, we will inform the country of the progress achieved on the issues addressed.

We thank Venezuelans and the international community for their support of this process, especially the Government of the United States of America, the initiative’s principal promoter.

We will continue working responsibly and resolutely to advance toward a democratic, institutional, and free Venezuela.
